Recovery during several simultaneous interventions cannot be assigned to a single medicine.
What the supplied research shows
A case report described a child with post-traumatic stress symptoms and prolonged catatonia after life-threatening experiences. The course included immobility and important physical complications. Treatment involved benzodiazepine injections, fluids, antidepressants and six electroconvulsive sessions, followed by improvement.
What it cannot establish
One case cannot determine the separate contribution of each treatment or establish that trauma explains all catatonic presentations. The clinical narrative does not validate a universal regimen or a diagnostic biomarker. Medication response also cannot establish the factual details of a traumatic event.
Forensic interpretation and case review
Forensic evaluation should separate the history, observed syndrome, physical complications and treatment response. A benzodiazepine may be used therapeutically in a patient who already has severe functional impairment. The paper supports examining the full clinical and psychosocial course, while avoiding a simplistic inference that drug exposure caused the original immobility or that improvement independently proves a particular account of causation.
