Second-Line Seizure Protocol Gave Diazepam to Both Planned Trial Arms

The randomized comparison begins after a shared benzodiazepine intervention.

What the source reports

The publication specified an open-label multicenter trial comparing levetiracetam with fosphenytoin after initial diazepam for convulsive status epilepticus. Planned outcomes included seizure cessation, recurrence, adverse events and intubation. The stated enrollment was a target rather than reported completed results.

Limits and uncertainty

This was a protocol, not a published demonstration of noninferiority. Shared diazepam does not permit an isolated estimate of its efficacy. Open-label management and the definition of seizure cessation matter when interpreting any eventual trial findings.

Application to expert review

For literature review, label methods and hypotheses accurately and identify where randomization enters the treatment sequence. Do not use this paper to claim that one second-line drug won or that diazepam alone controlled the reported proportion of patients; no such results were presented.
