Benzodiazepines Did Not Share the Antipsychotic Rhythm Association in This Cardiac-Arrest Study

An observational cardiac-arrest analysis found a psychotropic association driven particularly by antipsychotics, with a null benzodiazepine finding.

Drug classes differed

After exclusions, 222 cardiac-arrest subjects were analyzed for initial shockable versus nonshockable rhythm. Psychotropic use overall was associated with nonshockable rhythms, and antipsychotics showed an association. Benzodiazepines and antidepressants were not associated with that rhythm outcome.

Do not transfer the pooled finding to every class

The analysis selected people who had cardiac arrest and evaluated initial rhythm, not the overall probability of arrest among medication users. It also does not prove absence of other benzodiazepine cardiac or respiratory risks. Small subgroups, exposure classification, and confounding constrain interpretation. The study’s actual null result should remain visible, rather than attributing an overall psychotropic association to benzodiazepines. A specific death investigation requires the complete disease, exposure, resuscitation, and toxicology evidence.
