An authors’ response supplies methodological details that should accompany interpretation of the original alcohol-withdrawal comparison.
What the letter clarified
The authors stated that baseline investigations were performed in all 64 patients, with 33 in the baclofen group and 31 in the lorazepam group. Smaller counts printed in a table were described as a typographical error. The reply also explained sleep-related zolpidem use in the baclofen group and the exclusion of two patients who developed complicated withdrawal.
These are clarifications from correspondence, not new comparative efficacy outcomes.
Why corrections and exclusions matter
An analysis of completers can be affected by the exclusion of patients who worsen. Additional sleep medication can also affect interpretation of symptoms and rescue treatment. The letter acknowledged that a time-by-treatment analysis would have been more informative.
For evidence review, keep the corrected denominator and the post-enrollment exclusions visible. The correspondence does not independently establish that baclofen and lorazepam are equivalent, nor does an explanation of a co-intervention prove that it had no effect. It helps define the limitations of the comparison.
