CBT-Assisted Benzodiazepine Discontinuation Evidence Came From Only Three Anxiety Trials

An encouraging pooled effect still needs its evidence-base size disclosed.

What the supplied paper reports

A systematic review found that cognitive behavioral therapy combined with gradual tapering improved benzodiazepine discontinuation compared with tapering alone in anxiety-disorder populations. Benefits were reported at shorter and longer follow-up intervals.

Study limits

Only three studies contributed to the main pooled comparisons. Selected anxiety populations, differing therapies and small samples limit transfer to other indications or complex high-dose dependence.

Forensic implications

Distinguish an adjunctive psychological intervention from abrupt cessation or a medication substitute. Report the comparator and follow-up interval when discussing success. The review supports an assisted discontinuation approach in the studied setting, but cannot predict whether a particular patient will discontinue successfully or avoid withdrawal symptoms.
