D-PRESCRIBE’s Protocol Cited Earlier Benzodiazepine Results but Did Not Report Its Own Outcomes

Written by

in

Background results belong to the earlier trial that generated them.

What the paper found

The D-PRESCRIBE protocol proposed a pharmacist-led educational intervention for older adults using several potentially inappropriate medication classes. It cited prior EMPOWER benzodiazepine-discontinuation findings to justify the new design.

What the evidence cannot establish

A protocol describes intended methods and outcomes. Its citation of earlier success cannot establish that the new intervention had already achieved the same result or worked for every included drug class.

Implications for forensic review

Identify which trial produced each number and whether the publication contains completed follow-up. This distinction matters when explaining the evidence for medication education. Do not convert a planned endpoint, recruitment target or background citation into an observed benzodiazepine-discontinuation result.
