The comparison concerned hallucinations among patients already diagnosed with delirium.
What the source reports
The retrospective study included 602 psychiatric referral cases with delirium. About one quarter had hallucinations, most commonly visual. Benzodiazepine withdrawal was among several associated factors, along with alcohol history and selected other medications.
Limits and uncertainty
The referral sample mainly represented moderate or severe cases and lacked a general healthy comparison. Retrospective withdrawal classification and concurrent medicines can confound findings. Hallucinations alone neither confirm withdrawal nor establish how often benzodiazepine users develop delirium.
Application to expert review
For a differential diagnosis, reconstruct the established regimen, missed doses, taper timing and other physiological changes. Distinguish the incidence of delirium from its symptom pattern once present. The association supports considering withdrawal without treating a perceptual symptom as a stand-alone diagnostic test.
