A treatment-seeking sample found an association between positive ADHD screening, executive function, and reported quality of life.
What the source reports
The investigators assessed 76 included high-dose benzodiazepine or Z-drug users from a larger recruited group. Thirty screened positive for adult ADHD symptoms. Executive performance and several quality-of-life measures differed between screening groups, suggesting overlapping clinical burdens.
Limits and uncertainty
Screening positivity is not equivalent to a fully established diagnosis. Drug effects, withdrawal, sleep, and other symptoms can influence testing. The selected high-dose treatment population cannot be generalized to all prescribed benzodiazepine users, and the cross-sectional comparison cannot identify which condition caused the deficits.
Implications for forensic review
For a cognitive or diagnostic opinion, identify what instrument was used and when assessment occurred relative to exposure and detoxification. The study supports a broader evaluation, not automatic attribution of executive deficits to either ADHD or benzodiazepines alone. The distinction matters when discussing baseline vulnerability and treatment effects.
