An animal study measured reduced activity and altered pentobarbital sleep without a significant coordination effect from the plant preparation.
Separate tests produced separate findings
The investigators compared Jatamansi rhizome powder with water and diazepam reference treatment in small animal groups. The preparation reduced horizontal activity in an open-field test, shortened the onset of pentobarbital-induced sleep, and prolonged sleep duration.
It did not significantly shorten rotarod fall-off time under the tested conditions. Those findings should not be compressed into a claim that every sedative-related endpoint changed, or that absence of one coordination signal established absence of impairment.
The sleep test included another depressant
Pentobarbital-induced sleep measures a response in the presence of a separate sedative. It does not directly establish treatment of natural insomnia in humans. Groups were small, and the species, formulation, and observation windows limit translation.
The diazepam reference helps contextualize assay behavior, but it does not supply a human dose conversion. For an exposure assessment, retain coadministered substances and the function actually measured. The paper supports a limited central-depressant signal rather than a demonstrated safe alternative to benzodiazepine treatment.
