Lorazepam Response in Nodding Syndrome Was a Short-Term Catatonia Finding

Improvement on a symptom scale does not establish treatment of an entire neurological syndrome.

What the supplied paper reports

A Ugandan pilot evaluated catatonic features in children with nodding syndrome. Sixteen of thirty-three met the study’s catatonia criteria. Some responded substantially to lorazepam, including several who responded only after a second administration.

Study limits

The sample was small and selected, without a controlled long-term treatment comparison. Overlap between syndrome features and rating items complicates interpretation.

Forensic implications

Specify the symptoms that changed and the timing of each assessment. A response can support evaluating catatonia while not proving its cause or predicting long-term neurological recovery. The study does not establish a universal benzodiazepine regimen for nodding syndrome or all childhood regression.
