Walking Five Minutes After Endoscopy Was a Specific Recovery Endpoint

Early ambulation does not establish recovery of every cognitive function.

What the paper found

The multicenter trial analyzed thirty-eight patients after excluding two outliers. At five minutes, seventeen of twenty remimazolam recipients could walk compared with none of eighteen midazolam recipients. Initial sedation succeeded in both groups, while hypoxemia observations also differed.

Limits of the evidence

The sample was small and the exclusion of outliers matters to appraisal. Walking is not a comprehensive test of judgment, divided attention or memory. The study’s selected procedure and monitoring restrict broader transfer.

Implications for case review

Report the denominator and actual task instead of calling everyone fully recovered. An individual’s ability to stand or walk cannot independently establish capacity for a demanding decision or activity. Review later observations and the complete medication sequence rather than applying the group’s ambulation time as a clearance clock.
